Singapore: A city of futuristic splendor and flavorful traditions

Singapore had shimmered like a jewel of modern imagination—its skyline a choreography of sci-fi silhouettes and architectural marvels. From the glowing super trees of Gardens by the Bay to the organic rice terrace-inspired curves of Marina One, and the crystalline shards of Reflections at Keppel Bay, this city had redefined what the future looked like—polished to such a glossy sheen, one could see their own reflection in its ambition.

Yet amid this futuristic dazzle, time-honored heritage had flourished. Candy-colored Peranakan shophouses stood quietly dignified beneath vertiginous towers, and in every neighborhood, traditions played out like vibrant rituals—from the golden gleam of Sultan Mosque’s dome under the tropical sun to the thundering pulse of Formula 1 night races and fire-breathing dragon dances that lit up Chinese New Year.

And when the sun dipped below the skyline, Singapore's legendary hotel scene stirred to life. At one property, albino peacocks had glided past like white ghosts of old-world grandeur. At another, a pink Calacatta marble pool table awaited its next player—an invitation to indulge in a city where nothing was too extravagant.

A Taste of Tradition: The Beyond Michelin Food Tour

One unforgettable afternoon had been dedicated to Singapore's most celebrated treasure: its cuisine. The Beyond Michelin Food Tour led us on a delectable deep-dive into the island’s culinary soul. We had wandered past sizzling woks and fragrant stalls in UNESCO-recognized hawker centres, weaving through bustling alleys to discover dishes loved by generations of locals.

Led by a charismatic local guide, we had feasted on eight mouthwatering icons of Singaporean flavor. Each dish told a story—some of humble beginnings, others of culinary rebellion and finesse:

  • Hainanese Chicken Rice, silken and savory, served with garlic-chili dipping sauce

  • Strong, aromatic Singapore-style Coffee, poured thick into porcelain cups

  • Crisp, flaky Curry Puffs with spiced potato filling

  • Buttery, golden Egg Tarts, still warm from the oven

  • Cloud-like Pandan Chiffon Cake, its emerald hue almost too pretty to eat

  • Charred and delicious Fried Carrot Cake (which, intriguingly, had no carrots)

  • Freshly rolled Popiah, bursting with crunch and umami

  • Sweet, chewy Butterfly Fritters, dusted in sesame and nostalgia

As we ate, we strolled, soaking up snippets of Singapore’s history—each bite a chapter, each step a new page.

Gardens by the Bay: A Dream in BloomLater, we found ourselves wandering among alien-like Super trees and whimsical biodomes at Gardens by the Bay. Nature and technology had danced here in perfect harmony—orchids, waterfalls, and bioluminescent flora rising skyward in a poetic display of sustainability and spectacle.

A Gourmet Interlude: Vegetarian Food Hall DelightLunch was an unexpectedly elegant affair at a vegetarian food mall, where artistry met innovation on every plate. Dishes were crafted with such precision and care that even the staunchest carnivore would have been swayed. Each morsel felt mindful—nutritious, yet indulgent, showcasing the nuanced layers of Singaporean plant-based cuisine.

A High-Tea Reverie at Atlas BarAnd then, there was Atlas. Oh, Atlas! A soaring ode to Art Deco decadence, where history whispered from gilded columns and velvet booths. Tea was served with Gatsby-level grandeur, and we were quite content to play the part.

Sipping delicate infusions beneath a chandelier of dreams, we were served a three-tiered tower of indulgences: miniature cakes stacked with ambition, scones as soft as clouds, and sandwiches crafted like couture. In those suspended hours, time itself had felt ornamental.

Who would have thought the true tower of power in Singapore was made of pastries?

From Michelin-grade street eats to marble-clad high teas, from spiritual serenity to futuristic wonders, Singapore had given us a taste of everything—past, present, and what’s still to come. It was a city where every flavor, like every skyline, told a story worth savoring.
